Musing on Land

So, first day of Welcome Week at Exeter University is over - as I type I'm preparing for day 2 - the School Day at the school of Law...

A topic came up on the forums about Nationality and borders, and it struck me (again) that I differ a lot from most "normal" (ahem) people in that I do not consider borders to be important - the whole immigration thing is a complete misnomer to me, since we're all genetically speaking almost exactly the same, then there's (in my mind) no difference between here and there, or them and us...

I'm not proudly British, or English, like a lot of my contemporaries, nor would I fight for my "Country" - although I'd fight like hell for my "land"; to me it's not about the Nation or the Monarch or the Parliament - it's about the land under my feet - the place where I belong...

I'm sure that should lead into a chorus of "Jerusalem" - but frankly I prefer Sinead O'Conners' take on that one in any case!

It's not so much "the country" that I try to identify with, it's the ideals espoused. Freedom, tolerance, acceptance and welcoming of others. A bunch of small minded lunatics want to keep us "pure" even though you can't get more of a mongrel heritage excepted, we do tend to let pretty much anyone settle here, and that's such a good thing.

I've gone off x-net again, I do that from time to time, so I'm following friends friends links to see who else is about. Nest time I'm up in Exeter for something we're both at,w e'll have to talk properly methinks.
